The European Union has passed groundbreaking legislation requiring fashion brands to take responsibility for textile waste. Starting in 2025, all clothing sold in the EU must include recycled content and be recyclable.
Fast fashion produces 92 million tons of textile waste annually, with most ending up in landfills or incinerated. The new rules aim to create a circular textile economy and hold brands accountable for their products’ entire lifecycle.
New Requirements:
- Separate textile waste collection by 2025
- Minimum 25% recycled content by 2030
- Extended producer responsibility for disposal
Sustainable fashion advocates celebrate the move while calling for similar regulations in other major markets.
