The United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP15) concluded with a historic agreement to protect 30% of the planet’s land and oceans by 2030. The deal aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.
Known as the “30×30” target, this agreement is seen as the Paris Agreement equivalent for nature. It includes commitments to eliminate $500 billion in harmful subsidies and increase funding for conservation in developing countries.
Key Commitments:
- 30% of land protected by 2030
- 30% of oceans protected by 2030
- $200 billion annual conservation funding by 2030
Environmental groups call it a significant step but emphasize that implementation and enforcement will be critical to success.
